Platform Engineering: the elements of WebRatio Platform that simplify the adoption of the approach

There is no doubt that 2024 will be the year of Artificial Intelligence will confirm itself as the technology of the moment, as evidenced by Gartner's Hype Cycle for software engineering[1] in which AI is at the peak of expectations.

However, if we look closer at the Hype Cycle, we notice that just before the peak, there is a new topic called "Platform Engineering." This trend is among the ten strategic technologies of 2024[2]that can bring innovation and achieve business goals more quickly.

But what exactly is Platform Engineering?

It is an emerging technological approach that can accelerate the deployment of applications and the pace at which they generate value for the company[3].

During the last two years this practice has gained increasing popularity, especially among organizations aiming to take a further step in their DevOps transformation journey. According to Gartner, by 2026, l'80%[4] IT companies will be involved in the Platform Engineering wave, with the promise of improving developer experience, accelerating product development, and increasing value to end-users.

According to the approach, a platform team creates and manages an internal developer platform (IDP) designed to support developers with shared and reusable elements. It provides tools, processes, and features to promote a seamless self-service development experience. The goal is to increase developer productivity, reduce their cognitive load, and present information in the most suitable way for the team's workflow.

The elements of WebRatio Platform ready for the approach

As defined by Gartner (and visible in the platform engineering diagram[5]) the categories of elements a platform must provide are mainly 4: reusable components, tools, services, and know-how. WebRatio Platform is ready to offer the services, tools, and components needed for platform teams.

  1. Reusable Components
Fundamental feature of WebRatio's Low-Code, the platform allows the creation of custom libraries of reusable components for virtually every development phase.

  2. Tools
Every web, mobile, and bpa development aspect has a dedicated design tool, including for the interface design.

  3. Services
With WebRatio Platform, it is possible to create connectable microservices for application frontends, reusable in different projects.

Low-Code, born with WebRatio to simplify web application development, once again proves to be a technology ready for new development approaches, as in the case of AgileDevOps and now Platform Engineering. It shows how Developer Experience (DX) is always the center of WebRatio Platform development and its Low-Code tools.
